Buckners Sports

Some modern-day baseball fans may argue that Bill Buckner's blunder in 1986 against the 'Miracle Mets' was the spark that ignited the baseball world and made the sport more exciting to fans all over the country. While this might be true, it was two years after that which has energized fans on the west coast and began a string of California-based post-season appearances by the likes of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants. The 1988 World Series pitted the American League's Oakland Athletics, with a season record of 104-58, against the National League's standard-bearer Los Angeles Dodgers, 94-67, in a rare west coast showdown for the ages. Tony LaRussa's power and pitching faced off against Tommy Lasorda's banged up rag-tag 'Blue Crew.' The series, as a whole, would not disappoint, but it was game one, in particular, that offered up not only one of the greatest moments in the history of baseball, but would serve to launch the sport into a realm that would define it and reaffirm it's true place as 'America's pastime' for years to come.
